“Leśnia” is not a representation of the forest; it is the forest, reimagined as an immersive, sensory-driven installation that collapses the boundary between art and environment. Through the interplay of light, scent, sound, and material presence, it invites not just observation but participation. The forest becomes a living medium, a co-creator of atmosphere and perception.
What struck me most was the way this installation activated embodied memory. As light filtered through translucent layers and the air filled with the scent of moss, earth, and green growth, I found myself slipping into a state of slowed attention. It was no longer about looking at a scene, but about being within it. The installation offered an invitation to listen, breathe, and remember with the entire body.
Three key reflections it sparked in my own practice:
Choreographing Perception “Leśnia” doesn’t guide viewers through didactic statements; it cultivates an atmosphere in which perception is gently shaped. I’m increasingly interested in how light, scent, and tactility can structure attention and support deep, introspective engagement.
The Environment as Material Rather than treating nature as content or theme, this work positions the forest itself as a sensory material. This shift resonates with my own approach working with preserved plants, natural textures, and edible elements not as metaphors, but as embodied agents of meaning.
Memory Through the Senses Scent and sound bypass rational analysis and go straight to emotional memory. This installation reminded me how vital it is to work across sensory registers if the goal is not simply to communicate, but to evoke. Memory, after all, is not only cognitive it is olfactory, sonic, tactile.
In my own upcoming exposition, these reflections are finding form in how I think about the table as a sensory centre, and how materials such as fermented, foraged, dyed, and preserved elements can function as sites of both intimacy and critique.
“Leśnia” is a reminder that art can become a place of return. Not only to nature, but to the self in its most porous, receptive state.

„LeŚnia” | instalacja z okazji 30-lecia @centrumswjana w Gdańsku Tworząc Leśnię, chciałem oddać głos naturze – tej niedoskonałej (zarazem doskonałej), nieoczywistej, nieplanowanej. Brzoza spleciona z wyką. Forsycje porośnięte samosiejkami topoli i wierzby. Rośliny, które w szkółkach były pomijane, tutaj dostały drugą szansę – najpierw w instalacji, potem w ogrodzie, który dla nich projektuję. Wnętrze gotyckiego kościoła stworzyło naturalne warunki: monumentalne kolumny stały się pniami drzew, a sklepienia – ich koronami. Niższe piętra „lasu” tworzą m.in. brzozy, forsycje, tawulki, parzydła leśne, przetacznikowiec, przywrotnik i kostrzewa. Z czasem trawa nie jest już tak równa, liście opadają – ale to właśnie dopełnia opowieść. Przemijanie i życie w cyklach to esencja natury, z którą pracuję. Zależało mi także na autentycznym wrażeniu. Na trawie porozrzucałem gałęzie, które trzaskają pod stopami, oraz szyszki bukowe, na które czasem się nadepnie – jak podczas spaceru boso po lesie. Odpowiednio ustawione światło przebija się korony drzew, tworząc smugi padające na polane. Obraz, dźwięk powstały specjalnie dla tej instalacji – to nie są gotowe nagrania z sieci, lecz sensoryczne kompozycje stworzone tu i teraz, z myślą o „LeŚni”. Zapach także stworzony na tę okazję. _______________ ok. 200 m² aranżacji w tym ok. 170 m² trawnika, ponad 250 roślin – z czego wiele to „zapomniane” okazy, zarastające w szkółkach __________ Przez pierwszy weekend odwiedziło nas prawie 20 000 osób! WOW! __________ Uprzedzając pytania – folia zabezpieczająca kamienną posadzkę także dostanie kolejne życie – przyda się przy następnych wydarzeniach.
